Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is currently navigating turbulent waters within his own party due to his recent push for a continuing resolution that many see as laden with unnecessary spending. This move, according to Capitol Hill insiders, might have jeopardized his position as Speaker, especially given its timing right before the Christmas season.

“Mike Johnson spent a lot of time fundraising off of selfies with President Trump, and then betrayed him right before the inauguration,” a senior House Republican staffer revealed. This sentiment underscores the growing discontent among Republicans who feel let down by Johnson’s actions.

The 1,574-page spending bill, which has received bipartisan support, has nonetheless sparked controversy due to Johnson’s broken promises. In September, Johnson had stated he had “no intention of going back” to the “terrible tradition” of a Christmas omnibus. However, the reality of the situation seems to have diverged significantly from his earlier commitments.

A senior House aide expressed the gravity of the situation, noting that the issue is now one of trust rather than competence or leadership.
“It’s not a competence or leadership question for some folks now. It’s a trust question. That’s gonna be tough to come back from,” the aide commented.

Despite Johnson’s assurance that passing the CR would pave the way for a resurgent America First agenda under President Trump, opposition remains strong. Notables such as Vivek Ramaswamy, Elon Musk, and even President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance have voiced their disapproval.

Further criticism arises from the process by which the spending bill was crafted. Johnson had promised transparency and involvement from committee leaders, with a 72-hour window for members to review the bill. In practice, however, the CR was negotiated in secrecy by leadership, leaving many feeling sidelined.

“On every important issue this majority has faced, the Speaker has shown himself to be inapt and outsmarted by Biden and Schumer and is too easily willing to surrender,” a House Republican lawmaker lamented, highlighting the perceived inadequacies in Johnson’s approach.

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has been vocal in his opposition to Johnson’s Speakership, stating, “I’ll vote for somebody else.” Massie further criticized his colleagues for their cognitive disconnect, tweeting, “That 1557 page bill was a product of the swamp that uniparty Johnson was happy to facilitate.”

While no other House Republicans have yet declared their intention to challenge Johnson for the Speakership, the slim majority held by Republicans could empower even a small faction to influence the selection of the next Speaker. As of now, Johnson’s office has chosen not to comment on the unfolding situation.
