Valerie Bertinelli is rediscovering love with a new boyfriend, employing a unique rule to fuel their long-distance relationship. The esteemed actress, 63, recently revealed that she’s in a relationship with a writer based on the East Coast, who is 10 years her junior.

She describes her new partner as “mature, kind, thoughtful, [and] patient.” Despite being physically apart, they’ve instituted a “three-week rule,” promising to see each other at least once every three weeks.

“We never go longer than that without seeing each other,” said the “One Day at a Time” star. “After all, it’s about finding the joy in life and sharing it.”

Their connection sparked a few years ago when her now-beau commented on one of Bertinelli’s Instagram posts. “I thought he was interesting,” she reminisced, adding, “It was strictly platonic, but there was something about him that I connected with, something familiar and comforting. He felt like a kindred spirit.”

As time passed, their bond deepened, culminating in a significant phone call this past January. Bertinelli recalled how they both had strong feelings but were reluctant to acknowledge them, given the prospect of a long-distance relationship.

“We finally said, ‘Why are we doing this? It’s going to be challenging, because it’s long distance but why not?’” Bertinelli questioned. “You only live once.”

Their first face-to-face encounter happened during a romantic trip to New York City in March. Recalling the moment, Bertinelli said, “I just jumped out of the car, and I ran to him, and I hugged him. It was the best hug. I immediately felt like I was home. This is where I belong, in this man’s arms. It all feels incredibly right.”

From then on, they agreed to the “three-week rule”. “I’m glad it’s happening. But it’s like, what the heck is happening? It’s a seesaw of emotions,” she admitted.

Having previously imagined herself remaining single for the rest of her life, Bertinelli openly admitted this week that she was “in love”. This new chapter comes after a significant period of self-reflection and personal growth.

“I want to be clear that this process has taken a long time,” Bertinelli said. “I got more intentional about my healing. That meant a lot of walks with [my dog] Luna, a lot of therapy sessions, a lot of learning that I deserve to feel good.”

Bertinelli also discussed the emotional work she undertook following her past relationships, including her marriages to musician Eddie Van Halen and financial planner Tom Vitale. This healing journey, she explained, led her to the realization that she deserves love, allowing her to open herself up to love once again.

She candidly confessed, “I’m in love … I was adamant I was never falling in love again. I was supposed to die with my six cats and my dog, and very happily live the rest of my years alone — I’m good alone.”
