This collaboration marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in four decades that McDonald has joined the Doobie Brothers in the studio to contribute to a full-length album.

According to a Facebook update by the band, McDonald has been actively involved in the songwriting process for the upcoming release. Although it’s been over 40 years since McDonald has written and recorded with the band, he has maintained a connection with the group, joining them on a 2020 tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary, as reported by Ultimate Classic Rock.

I’m hoping we’ll be able to debut a few of our new songs [on the tour],” band member Simmons said. “There’s some really high energy stuff that will be fun for us to play and hopefully work well with our better known tunes. We’ll keep you posted and let you know how that’s workin’ out.

In 2014, McDonald lent his talents to the 2014 album “Southbound,” which offered a fresh take on some of the Doobie Brothers’ classic hits. Now, Simmons suggests that the band has been working on a lineup of new songs that they are eager to share with their fans.

McDonald was a member of the band from 1975 to 1982, during which time he made significant contributions to hit songs such as “What a Fool Believes,” “Real Love,” “Takin’ It to the Streets,” and several others.

The band is planning for a release date in the Spring or Summer of 2024. Fans of the Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald can look forward to this exciting reunion and the fresh music it promises to bring.

I like Michael McDonald. However, as a big Doobies fan, you can’t beat Tom Johnston, as lead singer & guitarist. Watch their 2018 concert @ the Beacon Theater in NY. It is fantastic, and fun to watch the band have such a great time, in such an incredible setting.

Michael McDonald teaming back WITH the Doobie Brothers is always awesome news. Michael still has a great iconic voice, still knows how to write and play great music. Why not!! That’s not taking away from Tom or Pat or any other Doobie Brother, but time for another Minute BY Minute album! Anybody who is fretting over this should go to Santa Cruz Beach, get a brew, smoke a joint and relax.
