  • Pope Francis warned that the rising temperatures caused by climate change could bring about the second great flood.
  • He said that the great biblical flood could repeat if corruption and injustice continue.
  • Writer Marco Pozza wrote about the Pope’s remarks in a book that will be published this month.

Pope Francis warned that the climate crisis could bring about a repeat of the Biblical great flood unless world leaders rise up to fix corruption and injustice.

Pope Francis told Italian writer Marco Pozza that mankind is facing another “great deluge, perhaps due to a rise in temperature and the melting of glaciers. [That is] what will happen now if we continue on the same path.”

Pozza, who is also chaplain of Padua prison, wrote the Pope’s remarks in a new book, entitled “Of Vice and Virtues”, which is scheduled for publication this month. Corriere della Serra published an excerpt from the book on Sunday.

The Pope urged world leaders to act with “prudence” and “sympathy, with empathy, for situations, people, the world, [and its] problems.” He added that the government should “stop and think” before making rash statements and decisions.

He acknowledged that it is natural for Christians to have some doubts about their faith and in God, so he urged believers to have patience. The Pope added that the truly faithful, who persevere in their beliefs despite their doubts, will be rewarded.

Pope Francis stated that God used the great flood as punishment for injustice in the world, saving only the virtuous Noah. As the instrument of God’s wrath, the deluge was meant to “clean up” the world and right its wrongs.

The Pope declared, “God’s wrath is against injustice, against Satan. It is directed against evil, not that which derives from human weakness, but evil of Satanic inspiration: the corruption generated by Satan, behind which single men, single women, entire societies go. God’s wrath is meant to bring justice, to ‘clean up’.”

He added that wrath can save if it urges people to change their ways.

“Of Vice and Virtues” is based on a series of conversations between Pozza and Pope Francis.
