The Skinny:

  • A 17-year-old driver lost control of a BMW at over 120 mph in Virginia, nearly hitting a police officer
  • The high-speed crash involved two other vehicles, including a police car
  • The teen driver has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving; police urge parents to use this incident as a teachable moment

A dashcam video captured a harrowing incident in suburban Fairfax County, Virginia, as an out-of-control BMW sped across four lanes of traffic and a highway median at more than 120 miles per hour, narrowly missing a police officer.

The frightening event occurred late Monday morning when an officer was making a routine traffic stop on the southbound Fairfax County Parkway.

The 17-year-old driver of the BMW lost control, spun around, and careened across traffic, striking both the car that had been pulled over and the police vehicle. The unidentified officer managed to dodge the speeding vehicle, narrowly escaping a potentially fatal collision.

The driver who had been pulled over was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said the teen driver was going “well over 120 mph” and was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving. Both the driver and his two underage passengers sustained minor injuries.

In a Facebook post, officials expressed relief that everyone involved in the incident emerged relatively unharmed and encouraged parents to use the video as a teachable moment for their teen drivers about the consequences of their driving behavior on others’ lives.

Amazing , the officer almost ran into the crashing car. If you don’t believe in guardian angels , well , this officer’s was working overtime. Minor injuries and no fatalities.
