Chris Cuomo, the host of NewsNation, has taken a strong stance against Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, criticizing her for pointing fingers at the U.S. regarding the fentanyl crisis. Cuomo argues that Sheinbaum’s government plays a significant role in the epidemic by enabling cartels to continue their drug trafficking operations.

Following a weekend of threats to retaliate against a proposed 25% tariff on Mexican imports by President Donald Trump, Sheinbaum decided to deploy 10,000 National Guard soldiers to the northern border. This move is aimed at curbing the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

Cuomo did not hold back on his show, “CUOMO,” stating, “We need Mexico to do more. Why? Because fentanyl deaths increase every year because of them. Seventy percent of the 100,000-plus overdoses in America last year were fentanyl. It’s coming from there primarily.”

He also pointed out the broader criminal activities of the cartels, noting that they are involved in human trafficking as well.

“In 2018, they made $500 million. Four years later, they made $13 billion selling people,” Cuomo emphasized, underscoring the scale of the problem.

Cuomo accused President Sheinbaum of mocking U.S. concerns and failing to acknowledge Mexico’s corruption issues.

“You know who knows all this but doesn’t own it and mocks our concerns? President Claudia Sheinbaum,” he said. He added that Mexico is consistently ranked among the most corrupt countries, yet Sheinbaum dismisses allegations of cartel tolerance as “slander.”

Sheinbaum had previously taken to social media to refute claims from the Trump administration that her government is allied with cartels, while also criticizing the U.S. for not addressing drug dealing within its own cities.

Cuomo, however, argues that the Mexican government should not deflect responsibility.

“You don’t get to argue that addiction is about demand when you’re flooding us with supply,” he stated.

The issue of corruption in Mexico was highlighted during the 2024 elections, where cartels reportedly disrupted the democratic process by attacking campaign rallies and interfering with polling stations.

Cuomo also addressed backlash from viewers regarding his language in a previous segment, where he referred to Sheinbaum as “the Mexican lady.” While acknowledging the criticism, he urged viewers to focus on the pressing issue of the fentanyl epidemic.

“Her position as president does warrant being named and titled and I should have done that consistently all the way through. You’re right. But I call you woke. You know why? Because you’re outraged at the wrong thing,” Cuomo said, urging people to “wake up” to the reality of the situation.

He concluded by criticizing those who focus more on semantics than on the actions of Sheinbaum’s government.

“You treat your own leaders worse than the head of a country that is killing your countrymen and creating problems on an epic scale. Think about that,” he asserted.

The fentanyl crisis remains a critical issue, with over 21,000 pounds seized at the southern border in the last year of former President Joe Biden’s administration and overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl reaching over 80,000 in recent years.
